FORT MYERS, Fla. (WFLA) — An 84-year-old woman is hospitalized after she was bit by an alligator while walking her dog near a pond, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.

On Thursday, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, EMS, and the FWC responded to the pond in North Fort Myers after receiving a report of the gator bite.

A trapper was called to remove the 7-foot, 3-inch gator.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for her injuries. Her current condition is unknown.

The FWC reminds Floridians to stay vigilant near bodies of water. People should keep pets on leashes, swim only in designated areas, and to never feed a gator.

Anyone with concerns about a nuisance alligator can call their toll-free hotline at 866-392-4286.
