Angel Reese injury update: LSU women’s basketball star, WNBA rookie out for season

Date:

Former LSU women’s basketball star Angel Reese’s rookie season in the WNBA has come to an end.

On Saturday, the Chicago Sky announced on X (formerly Twitter) that “Bayou Barbie” will miss the remainder of the season with a wrist injury.

“After undergoing further medical evaluation after the Sept. 6 game against Los Angeles, Angel Reese has been ruled out for the rest of the 2024 season with a wrist injury, the team announced today. The team will provide medical updates later as needed,” the Sky wrote in their statement.

Reese shortly confirmed on X that her season was done, adding a heartfelt message.

“What a year. I never would have imagined the last bucket of my rookie season would be a 3 but maybe that was God saying give them a taste of what they will be seeing more of in Year 2 lol. Through it all, I have showed that I belong in this league even when no one else believed. All I have ever wanted was to come into the W and make an impact. I can confidently say I have done that and will strive to keep doing so,” Reese wrote on X.

“I’m filled with emotions right now that I have a season-ending injury, but also filled with so much gratitude for what is next. Although this is God’s timing and not mine, I am finally able to give myself a physical and mental break. God gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers. You’ll still see me being the biggest cheerleader on the sideline! And Unrivaled League, see you soon!”

The former LSU star forward, who went No. 7 in the 2024 WNBA draft in April, was putting together a strong rookie campaign in the WNBA with the Sky. The Baltimore native had 15 consecutive double-double performances from June 4 through July 11, setting a WNBA rookie record. She finishes her season with 27 total double-doubles this season, also a WNBA rookie record.

Reese led the Sky in rebounds in 28 of the team’s 34 games she played this season. That has helped position her in the race for the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year award with the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark.
