Angel Reese: Injury rules ’emotional’ WNBA star out of Chicago Sky season finale

Date:

Angel Reese has told her millions of social media followers that she is “filled with emotions” after suffering a wrist injury for Chicago Sky which will keep the 22-year-old out of the rest of the WNBA season.

Rookie Reese set a WNBA record with 15 consecutive double-doubles earlier this season and finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds in a 117–109 win over the US national team in the All-Star game.

Chicago are a place shy of the playoff positions after Reese scored a team-high 24 points in their home win over Los Angeles on Friday, but medical checks after the game have ruled her out of their remaining six regular-season games and a potential post-season.

Angel Reese: ‘Gratitude’

“Although this is God’s timing and not mine, I am finally able to give myself a physical and mental break,” Reese said, adding that she expects to be the “biggest cheerleader on the sideline”.

“I’m filled with emotions right now that I have a season-ending injury, but also filled with so much gratitude for what is next.”

Bayou Barbie

Nicknamed the Bayou Barbie because of her eyelashes and pink nails, Reese is the most-followed WNBA player on social media.

The brash 6ft 3in guard posted 446 rebounds, averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds a game in her maiden top-flight campaign.

Team-mate Michaela Onyenwere responded to Reese’s announcement by telling her she should be “proud” and was at “just the beginning”.

WNBA: Reese injury

Reese said making an impact in the WNBA was “all I have ever wanted”. “I can confidently say I have done that and will strive to keep doing so,” she reflected.

“What a year… through it all, I have shown that I belong in this league even when no-one else believed.”

Chicago are in action again when the Eastern Conference team play the Dallas Wings at the Wintrust Arena on Sunday (6pm ET).

Dallas are 11th in the Western Conference, having lost 25 of their 34 matches.
