Mets acquire versatile Eddy Alvarez in trade with Red Sox

Date:

The Mets have added some depth, acquiring lefty-hitting infielder/outfielder Eddy Alvarez via trade from the Red Sox and assigning him to Triple-A Syracuse.

The return going to Boston in exchange for Alvarez is unknown.

Alvarez had been playing for Boston’s Triple-A affiliate in Worcester, where he posted a .247/.348/.463 triple slash with 18 home runs in 452 plate appearances over 114 games.

The 34-year-old Alvarez has played parts of three seasons in the majors — with the Marlins in 2020 and 2021 and the Dodgers in 2022.

In 134 plate appearances over 50 big league games, Alvarez has hit .183/.262/.262 with one home run.

Defensively in the majors, he has gotten time at shortstop, third base, second base, and both corner outfield positions.
