Hal Murrell resigned his position as Summit girls basketball coach on Monday after one season. The Spartans finished with a 10-17 record last season and was eliminated in District 10-4A tournament by Brentwood.
“We appreciate Coach Murrell and his hard work for our program and wish him well on his next steps,” Summit principal Sarah Lamb said in a statement. “SHS will be actively looking for our next head coach.”

Murrell took over at Summit following the resignation of John Wild in April 2023. Wild had led the program for four years and moved on to take a role at Santa Fe.
Murrell has a long coaching history in the Columbia area, including 14 years as the boys basketball coach at Columbia. He led the Lions to 236 victories before moving to Dickson County in 2018. Murrell spent one season as an assistant at Dickson before taking the helm for the next two seasons.
Before taking the job at Summit, Murrell had spent two years coaching girls basketball at Forrest, amassing a 25-31 record, twice falling in the Region 4-2A semifinals.
