Kate Middleton and Prince William looked more in love than ever in an emotional new video announcing that the Princess of Wales has completed chemotherapy.

On Monday, Sept. 9, the royal mom shared the news via a three-minute video that left viewers with much to take in — including a personal update on Kate’s health. “Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus,” she said.

Interspersed with Kate’s voiceover was footage of her with her husband of 13 years, Prince William, and their three children Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6. The clip — shot in August by Will Warr in Norfolk, where the Wales family resides in their country home of Anmer Hall — gives viewers an unprecedented look behind the curtain into their family life.

The royal couple, who have been together for more than 20 years now, can be seen holding hands, laying down next to one another and sitting on a picnic blanket with the family dog, Orla. At one point in the clip, Kate lays her head on William’s shoulder; in another affectionate moment, William kisses his wife on the cheek.

“This time has, above all, reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted,” Kate said. “Of simply loving and being loved.”

Kate and William’s love story began as students at the University of St. Andrews in the early 2000s. In 2010, the two announced their engagement ahead of their April 29, 2011, wedding at Westminster Abbey; they celebrated 13 years of marriage earlier this year, a little over one month after Kate released a much more somber video on March 22, announcing she had been diagnosed with cancer.

“The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family,” Kate, 42, said in the video released Sept. 9. “Life as you know it can change in an instant, and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”

She added, “The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you,” she said, no doubt referencing William, also 42, and their children. “With humility, it also brings you face-to-face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything.”

Kate and William’s public displays of affection in the new video were a stark departure from years past, when the Prince and Princess of Wales were typically more stoic in their interactions publicly. Historically, the two have been less demonstrative in public, though Myka Meier, royal etiquette expert and founder and director of Beaumont Etiquette, previously told PEOPLE, “There is no actual etiquette or royal protocol that says the couple must refrain from PDA.” The likely reason for the couple’s restraint, she said, is because they are “working representatives of the British monarchy.”

While no specific return-to-work date was specified in the Sept. 9 announcement, Kate has been working from home and keeping in touch with her team as the summer has progressed. PEOPLE understands she will not join William this week as he visits Wales, but that she does plan to attend Remembrance Sunday on Nov. 10 with her husband. Remembrance Sunday is an annual staple in the royal diary, where royals, politicians and military leaders gather at the Cenotaph memorial in Whitehall, London to pay tribute to fallen service members.

“I am, however, looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can,” Kate said on Sept. 9.

After undergoing abdominal surgery in January and her cancer announcement in March, thus far Kate has only made two official public appearances in 2024 — at June 15’s Trooping the Colour and then the next month at Wimbledon on July 14. After her Wimbledon appearance alongside daughter Princess Charlotte and sister Pippa Middleton, royal biographer Robert Jobson, author of the new book Catherine, the Princess of Wales, told PEOPLE, “Before, she used to live her life by the calendar, and now she is living her life, and the calendar comes after.”

He added, “She will be back, but when you have had an experience like this, it changes your perspective and the order of things.”
