American Airlines adding more than 300 jobs to its Tulsa maintenance facility

Date:

American Airlines will add more than 300 jobs at its Tulsa facility as it increases lines of heavy check maintenance work, the company announced Monday.

The airline is creating around 500 jobs, including more than 385 licensed aviation maintenance technician positions, as it adds work at its maintenance bases in Charlotte, Pittsburgh and Tulsa, according to a press release. Of that total, Tulsa will see 321 of the openings, including 227 for aviation maintenance technicians.

“American is excited to grow our talented Technical Operations workforce with more high-paying, skilled aviation maintenance positions,” Greg Emerson, American’s vice president of base maintenance and facilities, said in the press release. “It’s an opportunity to grow our maintenance capacity and capabilities in the near-term and preserve them over the long run by continuing to build our pipeline of future maintenance team members — which is important work American has been doing for some time.”

The 321 jobs announced Monday are in addition to more than 300 new jobs that were added recently when the Oklahoma Department of Commerce awarded American $22 million for the company’s planned infrastructure improvements and expansion of its existing Tulsa facilities.

American is one of Tulsa’s largest employers. It operates its largest maintenance base in north Tulsa and employs more than 5,000 people here.

“We are thrilled that American Airlines’ new jobs announcement will have a significant impact on its maintenance base in Tulsa,” Mike Neal, president and CEO of the Tulsa Regional Chamber, said in a prepared statement. “COVID-19 took a toll on this country’s commercial aviation industry, but American Airlines has rebounded in a big way, thanks to its commitment to its workers and its craft.

“The base in Tulsa has been the backbone of American’s maintenance, repair and overhaul work since 1946, and today’s news is proof that the company is dedicated to serving its customers and this community for years to come.”
