TENNIS: Lions take sting out of Jackets

Sep. 7—RUSHVILLE — The Lions varsity tennis team hosted the Yellow Jackets of Morristown Thursday. Rusknocking off the Jackets 4-1.

At No. 1 singles, Rushville’s Wes Mauzy lost a tight match in a super tiebreaker 3-6, 6-1, 11-9.

At No. 2 singles, Mason Mosburg kept his win streak alive with a straight set win 6-2, 6-4.

At No. 3 singles, Clayton Chase cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

Rushville’s No. 1 doubles team of Aiden Philpot and Jacob Schwendenmen gave up just one game in each set, posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Rushville’s No. 2 doubles team of Edgar Fernandez and Brady Martz were just as dominant, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.

The Lions return to action Monday, hosting Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference foe Lawrenceburg.

Greensburg

GREENSBURG — The Pirates played host to EIAC foe Connersville Thursday. The Spartans edged the Pirates 3-2.

In singles, Greensburg’s Mason McNulty won at No. 1 singles 6-3 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Greensburg’s Dan Fisse fell 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Greensburg’s Jacob Duerstock was defeated 6-3, 7-5.

Greensburg’s No. 1 doubles team of Reece Beaver and Jack McKinsey won 6-3, 6-4. The No. 2 doubles duo of Reece Chapman and Wade Schutte fell 6-2, 6-4.

Greensburg travels to Shelbyville at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Batesville

LAWRENCEBURG — The Batesville boys tennis team traveled to Lawrenceburg and picked up a 5-0 EIAC victory over the Tigers. Batesville improves to 5-4 on the season.

At No. 1 singles, Batesville’s Caleb Mohr finished off the sweep for the Bulldogs after a 2-plus hour match that went three sets where he found a way to win the third set in commanding fashion 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 over Safaivyan.

At No. 2 singles, Batesville’s Jevan Smith defeated Green 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 3 singles, Batesville’s Carson Meyer cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over P. Plumb.

Batesville’s No. 1 doubles team of Deev Ranka and Lincoln Garrett defeated Hall and Bray 6-0, 6-1.

At No. 2 doubles, Batesville’s Wes Peters and Owen Westerfeld defeated Tuffs and Fricke 6-0, 6-1.

Batesville’s junior varsity won 3-0.

Batesville’s Will Patterson defeated Wunderlich 8-5. At No. 1 doubles, Batesville’s Blake Hornberger and Max Walter defeated C. Plumb and Ahaus 8-1. At No. 2 doubles, Batesville’s Eli Doll and Will Patterson defeated Maddux and Covey 8-0.

The Bulldogs travel to Shelbyville at 10 a.m. for a rematch with the Golden Bears.
