Cobian joins Loyola University Chicago Basketball Staff – HoopDirt

Date:

Loyola University Chicago Head coach Drew Valentine announced the addition of Andrew Cobian to the men’s basketball staff. Cobian will oversee the program’s scouting efforts.

Cobian has been on the Long Island Nets staff for the last three years and had a five-year stint with Hofstra’s men’s basketball program prior to the Nets.

“As this process unfolded, our staff kept coming back to wanting a few things out of this position for this upcoming season,” said Valentine. “We really needed someone that was experienced and had a proven track record at individual player development, game planning and preparation in practice, and most importantly, someone that has worked with several success professional athletes.

“Andrew is someone that emerged in this process that can help us maximize our team this year. He’s worn a ton of hats throughout his professional career, and everyone raves about the energy that he brings to every part of the job. I love that he’s seen and worked with players at the highest level the past three seasons and will bring a fresh, firsthand perspective to how we can help improve our preparation and development. Happy to have AC on board.”

With the Nets, Cobian has held three positions within the organization. Most recently, Cobian was elevated to an assistant coach for the 2023-24 season after serving as an assistant video coordinator and head of player development.

In his first year as assistant coach, the Nets finished 19-15 overall and made it to the Eastern Conference finals with an upset over the first-place Magic in the conference semifinal. Overall, the Nets are 60-39 during his tenure.

I couldn’t be more excited to join the Ramblers community,” said Cobian. “I would like to thank athletic director Steve Watson, and I would like to thank coach Valentine for this amazing opportunity. Loyola has such a rich tradition of success. The culture coach Valentine has set for this basketball program is the best in the country. I look forward to helping the student-athletes continue their development on and off the court.”

Before transitioning to professional coaching, Cobian spend five years at Hofstra. He started as video coordinator in 2016 and spent three seasons in the position. He planned, edited, produced, and compiled all video packaging utilized by the coaching staff for scouting, recruiting, and game preparation purposes.

Cobian was elevated to director of player development in his final two seasons at Hofstra. He was responsible for preparing student-athletes for personal, academic, and athletic development success. Cobian worked closely with the coaching staff to help develop strategies the student-athletes could utilize for athletic and academic improvements.

From 2011 through 2015, Cobian served as men’s basketball assistant coach for New York Institute of Technology where he began his coaching career. He followed up with a graduate assistantship with Pace’s men’s basketball program in 2015-16.

Cobian was a four-year member of the Centenary men’s basketball program. He received his bachelor’s degree in sports management from the university in 2011. His master’s from Pace was in media and communications.
