Rhode Island College adds Eggleston as Assistant Basketball Coach – HoopDirt

Date:

Rhode Island College has named Irving Eggleston as an assistant men’s basketball coach.

Eggleston spent the previous two seasons coaching at Brandeis.

“I feel like the stars have aligned for Irv to join our staff here at Rhode Island College,” Head Men’s Basketball Coach Sam Ferry said. “He comes highly-regarded for his ability to connect with players, to coach on the floor and to recruit talented student-athletes. But more importantly, he is my type of guy: loyal and all about the team.”

This is a homecoming for Eggleston as he coached for the Anchormen from 2020-2022. Prior to his time in Providence, Eggleston spent one season at Lasell University where he recruited EJ Day, the best player in the history of the program.

Eggleston started his coaching career at his alma mater, Nichols College, helping lead the Bison to a program-record-tying 25-4 season, earning their first Top-25 ranking in school history and their second conference championship.

As a player at Nichols, Eggleston was twice named Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Year. He guided the Bison to three CCC Regular Season Championships and two Conference Championship contests. He graduated tied as the program’s all-time leader in steals (193) and is No. 12 in points (1,298). Eggleston also ranks in the top 10 in career free throws attempts and makes. During his career at Nichols, he was a two-time First Team All-CCC selection, as well as the 2015-16 CCC Defensive Player of the Year. Following his senior season, Eggleston was named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Div. III Second Team All-New England and Second Team All-Northeast Region by D3hoops.com. He was inducted into the Nichols Athletic Hall of Fame in 2021. Eggleston graduated cum laude with a double major in accounting and sports management and completed his MBA in 2018.

During the 2016-17 season, Eggleston played professionally, averaging 16.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.5 steals for Newcastle University of the National Basketball League (NBL) in England. He helped the Knights advance to the British Universities and Colleges Sport Premier Final Four for the first time in school history, as well as the NBL Division II Patrons Cup Championship.

As a Connecticut Suns Intern, Irving was a game day intern (2015) and a practice player (2011-2016). Eggleston was able to assist with the WNBA All-Star Game amongst other game-day duties.

Additionally, Eggleston is a Junior Celtics coach. The official youth basketball platform of the 18-Time World Champion Boston Celtics, the Junior Celtics provide overwhelmingly positive youth basketball experiences by treating each child like an MVP, rewarding players for self-improvement and teamwork, and building a future generation of champions and lifelong basketball fans.

Eggleston and his wife Sarah reside in Cranston, Rhode Island with their son Irving Maurice Eggleston III.
