Sweep of doubles propels Bearcats to first win

Date:

Sep. 10—Ignited by straight set victories at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 doubles, W.F. West was able to overcome the three singles losses and win the match via tiebreaker over R.A. Long on Monday night.

Former state qualifiers Javyn Han and Bryce Kuykendall made their return to the court as a tandem for the first time in two years and pulled out a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. Andre Tseng and Colin Bradley plus Jonah Adams and Ryan Becker also won, only dropping a combined nine games.

“We looked more consistent and strong,” W.F. West head coach Megan Wellander said. “I saw a lot of teams very active at the net and finishing points well. Our whole team was doing a good job getting their first serves in and that was very helpful.”

Despite Braden Newman losing a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4) heartbreaker at No. 2 singles, his second set victory secured the dual win for the Bearcats. They return to action on Wednesday at Black Hills before reigniting the Swamp Cup rivalry with Centralia on Friday.
