GIRLS TENNIS: West Scranton earns win over Valley View

Katie Fahey won a three-set battle with Sarah Sweeney, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2 singles in a match Tuesday that started Sept. 29 and was halted by rain to lift West Scranton to a 3-2 win over Valley View in Lackawanna League girls tennis.

Zarina Mustafina and Julia Farkaly won their singles matches for the Lady Invaders, who improved to 9-1 and climbed to fourth place in the District 2 Class 2A power ratings.

Valley View’s doubles teams of Emma Wood-Emily Moyles and Clare Lombardi-Riley Harrington won their matches on the first day the teams played.

Singles: Mustafina (WS) over Swingle, 7-5, 6-2; Fahey (WS) over Sweeney, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4; Farkaly (WS) over Evans, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Doubles: Wood-Moyles (VV) over Emiliani-Frounfelker, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4; Lombardi-Harrington (VV) over Heffron-Fiorello, 6-2, 6-2. Records: WS 7-1, VV 6-2.
