Mitchell boys golf secures fifth-place finish at Brookings Invitational

Sep. 16—MITCHELL — Behind four golfers who finished within two strokes of each other, the Mitchell High School boys golf team secured a fifth-place finish on Monday at the Brookings Invitational.

The Kernels posted a team score of 307 strokes on the par-72 layout at Brookings Country Club during the event, which featured 15 schools and 94 competitors.

Leading the way for Mitchell were Asher Dannenbring and Carter McCormick, who both carded rounds of 4-over 76 to finish in a tie for 17th place individually. Dannenbring went 42-34 en route to his finishing total, while McCormick carded three birdies to finish with his score.

Other Kernel performances include Marshall Widstrom’s 5-over 77 to finish in a share of 25th, along with Everett Morrison’s tie for 30th with a 6-over 78. Brady Reiners shot an 80 to finish in a tie for 45th, and Dawson Adams came in 64th with an 85.

Pierre’s Sawyer Sonnenschein earned his fourth individual title of the year, defeating Harrisburg’s Gavin Weir with a birdie on the first playoff hole. Both golfers posted rounds of 4-under 68. Watertown’s Ty Lenards finished in third with a 3-under 69, followed by Harrisburg teammates Riley Christensen and Charlie Swift in fourth (71).

Harrisburg finished ten strokes clear of Pierre to win the team championship with a cumulative score of 6-under 282. Watertown placed third with a 293, and Brandon Valley (295) finished ahead of the Kernels in fourth.

Mitchell’s next meet is its annual home invitational, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at Lakeview Golf Course.

MITCHELL — Sam Titze’s runner-up finish powered the Mitchell junior varsity golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet at Lakeview Golf Course on Monday.

Titze posted a round of 2-over 74, carding an eagle and three birdies for the afternoon. He finished both nines shooting 1-over 37. Jordan Meyerink came in a tie for 12th place after shooting a round of 80 against Lakeview’s par-72 layout.

Other Kernel performances include Matthew Mauszycki’s 81 to finish in a tie for 15th, Canon Moller’s round of 85 en route to finishing in 22nd, and Ian Weber (86) coming home with a share of 23rd. Gavin Polreis (87) and Mason Moody (87) finished tied for 25th, and Stratton Zens (93) and Tyler Christensen (93) came in a tie for 38th.

Watertown swept both the team and individual conference championships, as the Arrows posted a score of 304, led by Jerome Zebroski’s winning score of 1-over 73. Yankton’s Gus Sprakel, Harrisburg’s Jalen Dwire, and Brandon Valley’s Bennett Doss came in a tie for third place after shooting rounds of 3-over 75.

Behind Watertown, Brandon Valley (310) was second in the team standings, and Harrisburg (316) came in third. Yankton completed the top five behind Mitchell with a cumulative score of 324.
