Sergio Pérez’s father was rushed to hospital after collapsing in his bathroom when the Red Bull driver crashed at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Antonio Pérez Garibay told Mexican publication Medio Tiempo “the shock of the accident” may have caused him to faint and he had since been undergoing checks on his heart.

Pérez and Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz both walked away unscathed from a high-speed crash during the final laps of Sunday’s race in Baku as they battled to secure third place.

Pérez Garibay said: “Everything happened after the accident. The shock of the accident may have caused it. They are already checking my heart to see why I fainted.”

His comments were accompanied by a press statement confirming he had been rushed to hospital.

“Pérez Garibay was found unconscious in the bathroom of his Mexico City home, where paramedics attended to provide immediate medical attention,” the statement read.

“He was rushed to a hospital in the capital, where he is currently under medical observation and in stable condition.

“We thank you for your expressions of support and affection.”

A statement from Pérez Garibay’s own racing organisation, Scuderia Pérez, also confirmed the 65-year-old would remain under observation in hospital.

“Mr Pérez Garibay is stable but remains in intensive care under constant medical review, focusing mainly on his heart and other vital organs,” it read.

“The specialists in charge have indicated that his condition continues to be closely monitored.”

Sunday’s race saw Pérez fail to finish on the podium, a feat he has not now managed since April’s Chinese Grand Prix.

That has seen McLaren leapfrog Red Bull at the top of the Formula 1 constructor standings and Pérez slip to eighth in the driver standings on 143 points, a massive 170 points behind team-mate and championship leader Max Verstappen.

His next chance to add to his and his team’s tally comes in Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix.
