Mitchell girls tennis split triangular with Yankton, Sioux Falls Lincoln

Sep. 18—SIOUX FALLS — Valiant efforts by the Mitchell High School girls tennis team were on display Tuesday.

The Kernels split its final triangular of the season at Sioux Falls Lincoln, winning their opening dual over Eastern South Dakota Conference opponent Yankton 7-2 before being bested by perennial state powerhouse Lincoln 7-2.

Against the Gazelles, Mitchell started the dual with five wins in singles play, highlighted by Elly Clement’s 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Elise Koller in Flight 4, and Carsyn Weich’s strong victory over Sabrina Krajewski 7-6 (3), 2-6, 10-4 at Flight 2. Matteah Graves and Mia Larson earned wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles in straight sets, respectively.

In doubles, the team of Clement and Graves took care of Koller and Paige Mitzel in Flight 2 6-3, 6-1, and Larson and Katie Morgan earned the win at No. 3 doubles 7-6 (5), 6-1 over Meagan Scott and Karalyn Koerner.

Yankton’s lone points came from Nora Krajewski, who defeated Megan Mastel at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-1, and at No. 1 doubles with Sabrina Krajewski, defeating Mastel and Weich 6-4, 6-1.

In the Kernels’ second dual of the afternoon, Weich picked up her second singles win of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Grace Miner of Lincoln in Flight 2, and Clement won a close match at No. 4 singles over Angela Ge 7-5, 5-7, 11-9.

The rest of the matches were won by the Patriots, securing the remaining points in straight sets with the exception of one doubles match. Ge and Miner defeated Clement and Graves at No. 2 doubles 1-6, 6-4, 10-6.

Mitchell (15-2, 7-0 ESD) will face off against ESD opponent Watertown in the Kernels’ final dual of the season at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Hitchcock Park.
