“I’m sure he is frustrated. He’s an athlete. This is something he’s probably been doing since he was three or four years old,” Grier said. “I think he’s in a good frame of mind. He’s attacking his rehab and doing the work he needs to do. It’s just not a situation or an injury that we can rush or put a timeline on. When his body tells him he’s ready to play, then he’ll get back out there.”

When asked if he would go on LTIR, Grier said that putting the captain on LTIR doesn’t benefit the Sharks because of their cap space.

Couture told reporters there isn’t an immediate plan for him to get back on the ice. Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky emphasized that Couture’s contributions as a sounding board for younger players are still beneficial despite his absence from the ice.

“He’s going to be a big sounding board while he’s not playing right now,” Warsofsky said. “For me and our staff. He’s been around. He’s been in Stanley Cup Finals. He’s won a lot of hockey games. He’s a great captain. He’s still going to be impactful for our club.”

Shakir Mukhamadullin, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, and Yaroslav Askarov were all missing from day one of the training camp. Coach Warsofsky said each player’s injury is day-to-day.

“All those guys are day-to-day,” Warsofsky said. “We are just going to take this thing day by day. They could come in tomorrow and feel great, and we’re going to put them on the ice. There’s a plan in place for all three of those guys.”
