Walking has standout health benefits any time of the day. It can reduce your dementia risk, support longevity and help lower cholesterol levels. And that’s just scratching the surface of all the amazing things daily walks can do for your body.

Have you ever tried walking after a meal? It’s important for your gut health: Keeping things moving physically keeps things moving internally. And Today host Hoda Kotb recently explained a related reason as to why her family goes on walks after dinner each day.

“You know what we started doing by the way, since I now live in the suburbs?” Kotb tells co-host Jenna Bush Hager. “We started going on—I’m not going to use the word—’toot’ walks after dinner. Y’all should try it!”

Yes, it’s exactly how it sounds. Kotb takes her family on walks to let out any gas outside of the house.

“It’s great,” she says with Bush in shock at the news. “You take the kids out, everybody goes out after dinner, I say we’re going on our ‘walk’ … It’s better to do it outside.”

“Are y’all eating a lot of beans? What kind of fiber do you guys have going on?” Bush jokes, admittingthat she also goes on walks after dinner. BTW: beans make you fart not only for their fiber content, but also because they’re high in complex carbs and lectins, both of which may be harder to digest. Eating too much fiber at once can cause gas or bloating though, so it’s important to slowly increase your intake if you’re looking to include more fiber in your meals. That way, you won’t get uncomfortable side effects.

Fart walks aren’t just a Kotb thing. It’s actually a trendy term that has been taking over social media, where content creators go on post-meal walks to let out some gas. Not only can walking after eating help with digestion, but research has shown that walking for just 2 minutes after a meal can help control your blood sugar.

We’re all for this trend and Kotb’s family routine. And she says that calling it a “fart walk” makes it a fun activity for her kids. As she puts it: “It is a great idea. Think about it.”
