Massive great white shark bumps whale-watching boat in Pismo Beach. See the video

Date:

A great white shark paid San Luis Obispo County whale watchers an unexpectedly jaw-some visit this weekend.

On Saturday, boat tour charter SLO Tours shared a video of a great white bumping its head up against the boat off of Pismo Beach, giving the sightseers a visit they weren’t expecting.

“Fun day whale watching, then this dude shows up!” the post read.

In the video, as the shark approaches the small boat, someone onboard says, “Oh my god, he’s huge!”

The shark then surfaces, raising its head above the water and bumping the side of the boat as the people on board back away.

One person commented on the post, calling the encounter “the shark equivalent of a fist bump,” along with a fist bump emoji.

Another said, “The shark’s just like oh hey guys I’m here for your tour. Them: Aaaaahhhhh!”

Shark sightings aren’t uncommon in San Luis Obispo County, but shark attacks are rare.

The last recorded great white shark attack in San Luis Obispo County happened in 2021 near Morro Rock.

Prior to that, only two fatal shark attacks had been recorded in San Luis Obispo County in modern history — one in 1957 in Morro Bay and another in 2003 in Avila Beach.
