Barcelona within touching distance of achieving a record start to season

Barcelona have made an impressive start to the current season, achieving remarkable statistics that underline their dominance.

The team recently celebrated their sixth consecutive league victory by defeating Villarreal, inching closer to the records set by previous successful squads.

Specifically, they are just one win away from matching the streak achieved by Ernesto Valverde’s team in the 2017-18 season and two victories away from equaling Gerardo Martino’s record from the 2013-14 season.

A look at the history

Historically, Barcelona have had several significant beginnings to the La Liga season since its inception in 1928-29. Out of the seven notable starts, five involved winning the first six matches.

In one season, they managed to win seven games, while another season saw them achieve eight victories in a row.

With their current record of six wins, Barcelona have the opportunity to extend this streak to seven by securing a win against Getafe.

Interestingly, during their recent match against Villarreal, Flick’s men matched records set by legendary coaches throughout the club’s history.

Specifically, they equalled the achievements of teams coached by Roma Forns in 1929-30, Johan Cruyff in 1990-91, Louis van Gaal in 1997-98, Pep Guardiola in 2009-10, and Tito Vilanova in 2012-13.

Now, should Barcelona secure three points against Getafe, they would not only reach seven victories but also position themselves just one win away from the best start in La Liga history.

If this scenario unfolds, it would set the stage for an exciting match on Saturday, 28 September, when Barcelona faces Osasuna.

This match holds historical significance, as Osasuna previously interrupted winning streaks for both Johan Cruyff’s team in 1990-91 and Gerardo Martino’s side in 2013-14. With such a record on the line, Barcelona are poised to make history this season.
