Basketball legend Sue Bird honored with street dedication – Seattle City Council Blog

Date:

The City Council has voted unanimously to rename a street in honor of four-time WNBA champion Sue Bird. Tuesday’s legislation changes the name of a segment of 2nd Ave N, adjacent to Climate Pledge Arena, to Sue Bird Court.

“Sue Bird is the indisputable G.O.A.T of women’s basketball and I want to thank Mayor Harrell for initiating this recognition. As Chair of the Transportation Committee, I was proud to support the creation of this street name and shepherd it through Council in her honor,” said Councilmember Rob Saka (District 1). “Sue has left an enduring legacy of excellence in our city, both on and off the court. From leading our Seattle Storm to four league titles to being an outspoken advocate on a number of critical social issues. We’re very lucky Seattle can claim her as one of our own.”

Bird spent her entire WNBA career with the Seattle Storm after being drafted as the number one pick in 2002. Among her other achievements, Bird led her college team to two NCAA titles and won five Olympic gold medals. The renaming is supported by the Seattle Storm organization.

Additional background on the change can be found in the council’s agenda materials.
