The Abilene Cowgirls competed last Thursday at the Chapman Tennis quadrangular and ultimately found some success. Both Abilene #2 singles and doubles finished as runners up on the day as freshman Tessa Herrman placed for a second time this season at #2 singles, and the #2 doubles team of Emery Lady and Johanna Schautes.
Finishing in third place on the day was the #1 doubles team of seniors Aleah Ortiz, and Allison Rose, while #1 singles player Summer Bice finished fourth on the day.
Head Coach Megan Berry commented:
“It was a good day at Chapman with some really fun and competitive matches for the girls. Tessa had a successful day medaling at #2 Singles She got some great experience in close matches, which is really valuable early on in the season.
“Emery and Johanna had three really nice rounds at doubles, with their only loss coming in a tiebreaker. They also medaled at 2nd place for the day.
“Summer, Aleah, and Allison all did great things that we can build on, and I was excited to see some moments of progress.
“All the girls are really working hard to keep implementing what we talk about in practice. As a team we need to keep working to cut out the unforced errors so we can do a better job attacking our opponents. I’m excited for us to head to Smoky Valley on the 12th for another great progress check early in the season.”

On September 3rd, Abilene High School JV Tennis played at Beloit. Participating teams were Chapman, Concordia and two Beloit JV teams. Abilene’s Lexie Bolen had a great day by going 4-0 for a first place finish at #2 singles. “She really worked hard and came away with a medal,” said assistant Diana Wildman. “ I was very proud with her efforts. Her hard work at practice paid off.”
#1 singles KaAnn was 1-2 on the day. They were 2-2 on the day with wins over Chapman and Concordia. #2 doubles team of Aryian B arrand and Maddie Jenne were 0-4 on the day but are improving with each match.
September 5th, Abilene played at the Ellsworth JV Tennis Invitational Tournament. Teams included Chapman, Ellinwood, Sterling, Trego, Lyons and host team Ellsworth had two teams (Ellsworth Black and Ellsworth Red). Four of the six Abilene players were new to playing tennis but all had a fantastic day. Everyone medaled and placed 2nd as a team. “This is a hard working group of ladies who grow leaps and bounds as they get more playing time under their belts,” said Wildman.
Miranda Radenberg played #1 single and earned a 2nd place finish. She beat Ellsworth Red 6-3, Ellinwood 6-5 and then lost to a good Ellsworth Black player 0-6 in the championship. Miranda showed perseverance and maturity in her pool play match with Ellinwood. She was down and kept her cool to tie it up and pull off the win to take her to the championship match. Her senior leadership really helped set the tone for the others.
Our #2 singles player, Lizzie Brooks, has not had much experience playing tennis but did a great job the #2 spot. She beat Ellinwood 6-2, lost to Ellsworth Black 2-6 and then rebounded and won 6-1 against the Ellsworth player to place 3rd.
#1 doubles team included returner Mandi Simenson and newcomer Kit Barbieri. Mandi and Kit did a great job encouraging each other and finishing with a 2nd place medal. They beat Ellsworth Red 6-2, then struggled a bit against Trego but managed to end up on top with a 6-5 win. They lost to a very good Ellsworth Black in the championship 2-6.
Freshmen Lily Benton and Hope Dannefer played very well Thursday. They were aggressive at the net and had great hustle all day. They are 2 exciting players to watch. They beat Ellsworth Red and Trego, 6-2. They then faced an experienced and very good Ellsworth Black team for the championship. They fought hard but lost 3-6 in the championship.
“This group of ladies had a phenomenal day and their work ethic has paid off in the fact they all placed and came home with a 2nd place overall team finish.” Wildman said. “This week the JV team will head to Chapman and Marysville.”
