IU basketball roster notes: Updated heights and weights for the 2024-25 season

Date:

Practice has officially started in Bloomington, as IU basketball is just six weeks away from the highly anticipated 2024-25 season.

The program updated the team’s official roster at iuhoosiers.com this week, and as is the case each year, several players are being reported at new weights.  And this year we even have a returning player who has grown an inch, along with a freshman being reported taller than he was in high school.

Here’s an overview of the changes.

0 – JAKAI NEWTON

At 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, Newton is reported seven pounds heavier than this time last year.  He has also changed his jersey number from 12 to 0, taking over that number from Xavier Johnson.

1 – MYLES RICE

At 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, Rice is five pounds heavier than what was reported by Washington State a year ago.  He’ll wear No. 1 this year for IU after wearing No. 2 for the Cougars.  Kel’el Ware wore No. 1 for IU last season.

2 – GABE CUPPS

At 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, Cupps is reported five pounds heavier than a year ago.

3 – ANTHONY LEAL

At 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, Leal is unchanged from a year ago.

5 – MALIK RENEAU

At 6-foot-9 and 232 pounds, Reneau is reported one pound lighter than a year ago.

8 – BRYSON TUCKER

At 6-foot-7 and 207 pounds, Tucker is an inch taller and 27 pounds heavier than how IU how described him when he signed in April.  IU did not measure or weigh Tucker for reporting purposes when he arrived, so there’s a high probability all of that weight was not gained in the last five months.  Tucker is the first IU player since Bill Garrett to wear No. 8.

9 – KANAAN CARLYLE

At 6-foot-3 and 182 pounds, Carlyle is three pounds lighter than how he was reported by Stanford a year ago.  Carlyle will be the first IU player to wear No. 9 since Bob Masters in 1952.

10 – LUKE GOODE

At 6-foot-7 and 203 pounds, Goode is two pounds lighter than a year ago at Illinois.  He’s taking over No. 10 from Kaleb Banks.

11 – OUMAR BALLO

At 7-feet and 265 pounds, Ballo is five pounds heavier than how he was reported at Arizona a year ago.  Ballo takes over No. 11 from C.J. Gunn.

12 – LANGDON HATTON

At 6-foot-10 and 247 pounds, Hatton is reported seven pounds heavier than how he was reported at Bellarmine a year ago.

21 – MACKENZIE MGBAKO

At 6-foot-9 and 222 pounds, Mgbako is an inch taller and five pounds heavier than a year ago.  Those measurements suggest he clearly has the size to play the four at the high major level.

32 – TREY GALLOWAY

At 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, Galloway is unchanged from a year ago.

42 – DALLAS JAMES

At 7-feet and 245 pounds, James is reported 45 pounds heavier than last year’s South Carolina State roster.  That seems like a clerical error by his former school, or something that was never updated from his freshman season.  He’s the first player to wear No. 42 (Mike Woodson’s old number) since Peter Jurkin.
