Per the Spurs press release:

The Spurs Youth Basketball League (SYBL), presented by Pizza Hut, announced celebrations for its 35th anniversary. Originally known as the Drug-Free League, SYBL has been a cornerstone in the South and Central Texas area since its founding, shaping the lives of hundreds of thousands of young athletes through its emphasis on teamwork, cooperation, respect and discipline.

Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich and Kids Sports Network president/founder Frank Martin launched the SYBL in 1990. The organization has nearly 10,000 participants each year through 25 various locations.

Kara Allen, Chief, Impact, People and Belonging Officer at Spurs Sports and Entertainment stated,

“For the last 35 years, SYBL has rooted itself on not only teaching young people the game of basketball but also the critical life skills and character traits that are necessary for our next generation to succeed.”

This year, the SYBL will host a series of community events, fundraisers and special engagements all throughout the 2024-25 season.

  • Jam Session Tip Off Event: On Sunday, Sept. 29, SYBL will be hosting a day of celebration for past and present SYBL athletes and staff at the George Gervin Academy (6944 S. Sunbelt 78218) from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., featuring basketball skills challenges, small-sided games and a commemorative photo station. Athletes and families can register for the event here.
  • Alumni and Athlete Involvement: SYBL alumni will be honored as special guests at select Spurs games and community clinics. Additionally, SYBL athletes and volunteer coaches will receive complimentary tickets to cheer on the Spurs during select home games throughout the season.
  • Anniversary T-Shirt: SYBL is releasing a limited-edition, 90s-inspired commemorative shirt that will be sold at various events throughout the season. This retro-themed apparel pays tribute to the league’s roots and the influential era that shaped its early years.
  • SYBL Court Takeover: Frost Bank Center will host the SYBL Court Takeover later this season, an all-day event where SYBL athletes will take center stage on the same court as the San Antonio Spurs. SYBL athletes from across South Texas will participate in games, skills challenges and SYBL team photo shoot. More details will be shared later this season.
