Roma boss Ivan Juric discusses tactical shift during win over Venezia

Roma manager Ivan Juric weighed in on the team’s come-from-behind victory over Venezia which also featured a tactical switch in the second half.

The Croatian manager enjoyed a successful club debut last weekend, beating Udinese 3-0. However, the honeymoon seemed to be heading towards an abrupt end as the Giallorossi were trailing behind their Venetian hosts for the majority of the encounter.

But with a little bit of luck, Bryan Cristante pulled off the equalizer with a deflected long-range effort in the 75th minute, while the young Nicolo Pisilli came off the bench to head home the winner from a corner kick.

After the contest, Juric noted Roma was the fresher side, which helped them turn the result upside-down. He also discussed switching from his usual three-man defense to four at the back.

“We definitely improved in the second half,” said the former Torino coach in his post-match interview with DAZN via VoceGiallorossa.

“We were fresher than them. Let’s not forget that we played on Thursday and it’s understandable that some players were a bit tired.

“We went to four at the back in the second half and we did well. Those who came in gave us a big hand. Some were under par, but it was understandable after Thursday’s match”.

Juric is happy with the young contingent at his disposal, which includes the likes of Pisilli and Tommaso Baldanzi.

“I think we have four or five young players who we can work on. They have talent and enthusiasm. Pisilli, Baldanzi and Koné are talented and enthusiastic and I like them a lot”.

Finally, the new Roma coach identified the aspects that his team must improve in the coming matches.

“We have a lot to work on, but I think we played some good games. There are many positive takeaways. We certainly want to improve on counterattacks, coverage and controlling the game. We lacked quality at times, but today we faced a good Venezia side.”
