Suspect arrested in shooting death of man, 29, near Bronx Zoo

Date:

A suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of a 29-year-old man a block from the Bronx Zoo, police said Monday.

Herman Gayle, 26, is charged with murder and gun possession for allegedly shooting Devonte Serrano in the head near E. 182nd St. and Mapes Ave. in Belmont about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, cops said.

Serrano died at the scene, just down the block from his home.

Gayle rode off on a bike south on Prospect Ave. but surrendered to cops later Sunday. He has prior arrests, at least one on a weapons charge, and lives in Harlem, according to cops.

The victim had 22 arrests on his record, most recently for drug possession in Manhattan in 2019.

A small makeshift memorial was created on E. 182nd St. near the victim’s van.

The fatal shooting came nearly 12 hours after two men were shot, one fatally, outside a Bronx apartment building on Morris Ave. near Kingsbridge Road.
