Girls tennis: Litchfield Dragons’ depth leads to Wright County title

Sep. 30—LITCHFIELD — Thanks to its Nos. 3 and 4 singles, the Litchfield girls tennis team clinched the Wright County Conference championship on Monday.

The Dragons, ranked sixth in Class A, held off Delano for a 4-3 victory at Litchfield High School.

Emma Wuotila and Marcella Bruning helped clinched the title with three-set victories.

At No. 3 singles, Wuotila rallied after a second-set loss to beat the Tigers’ Brynn Spanier, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. Bruning followed a similar formula at No. 4 singles, beating Delano’s Eleanor Hajas, 6-4, 2-6, 10-2.

Isla Dille also got a Litchfield win at No. 1 singles. The Dragons’ No. 3 duo of Elly Woelfel and Emily Michels got the team lone doubles win.

Litchfield closes out the regular season against Le Sueur-Henderson at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at Le Sueur.

Yellow Medicine East swept singles play in a conference victory against MACCRAY at Granite Falls.

Brianna Nelson, Emma Keller, Sarana West and Abigail Jimenez were all victors for the Sting at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 singles. YME also got a victory at No. 2 doubles courtesy of Carley Redepenning and Kyla Smith.

The Wolverines’ Mia Shubert and Haven Osterfeld, and Maggie Burnett and Lillyanne Pauling won at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles.

YME is the No. 7 seed in the Section 3A team tournament and goes to No. 2 Luverne at 4 p.m. Thursday. MACCRAY is the 8 seed and travels to top-seeded Montevideo at 4 p.m. Thursday.
