‘I love to hit them’: Aussies crushed in historic century blitz… by a 13yo Indian prodigy

Date:

India has unearthed another superstar in teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who clobbered a 58-ball century during the ongoing Youth Test against Australia’s Under-19 team in Chennai.

Facing some of Australia’s most promising young bowlers at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, the 13-year-old smacked four sixes and 14 fours before he was run out by Christian Howe on 104 (62).

It was the second-fastest century in the history of Youth Tests, bettered only by Moeen Ali’s 56-ball hundred against Sri Lanka in 2005.

The left-hander also became the youngest cricketer to score a century at any professional level, toppling the previous record of 14 years and 241 days by current Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.

Suryavanshi, who was born in 2011 and idolised West Indies legend Brian Lara growing up, formed a 133-run partnership with opening partner Vihaan Malhotra before the hosts were bowled out for 296 in response to Australia’s first-innings 293.

“Honestly, I never feel threatened. Be it fast bowlers or spinners, I love to hit them,” Suryavanshi said, as reported by The Indian Express.

“At the same time, I also understand that I have to look at the pitch and play according to the situation. Even here I was only trying to do that.”

Earlier this year, Suryavanshi became the fourth-youngest cricketer in Ranji Trophy history after making two appearances for Bihar at age 12.

Australia was 4-110 at stumps on day two of the Youth Test, leading by 107 runs. Last week, India’s Under-19 team secured a 3-0 series sweep over their Australian opponents during the Youth ODIs.
