PSG Sensation’s Decision Dims Real Madrid Hopes, Spotlight Shifts to Liverpool Standout

Real Madrid are reportedly keen on a right-back to replace Dani Carvajal in the long term, but a reunion with Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi appears to be off the table.

In June, Mario Cortegana from The Athletic reported that Real Madrid are considering Hakimi as a potential successor to Carvajal for the right-back position.

The Spanish side see the Moroccan as a strong candidate for the role. Cortegana also mentioned that Hakimi’s appeal to Madrid lies in his background; he developed in their academy and has a close bond with Kylian Mbappé. With his contract running until 2026, he would have just one year left after this season.

Nonetheless, the defender wants to stay past 2026 in the French capital. According to Relevo (h/t Sport.fr), PSG’s right-back feels at home in France and isn’t looking to move elsewhere. Hakimi is open to signing a new deal and extending his time at the club.

This aligns well with the management’s plans, as they value his contributions, and talks have already started. Unless something unexpected happens, Hakimi will likely sign a new contract with the capital club soon.

As a result, Real Madrid could put all their chips in with Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, considering his current contract expires in June 2025. Still, a recent report also notes that he’s happy to extend his contract with the Reds.
