Boy dies after medical event at Stoughton basketball club Tuesday night, officials say – The Boston Globe

Date:

The Dana Barros Basketball Club in Stoughton was closed Wednesday after a child suffered a fatal medical event Tuesday night, club president Stephanie Creutz said in a statement.

Emergency crews attempted to resuscitate the “cherished teammate and friend,” but Creutz said the boy did not survive.

He was not identified.

“Our heartfelt condolence is extended to the player’s family as they deal with this unimaginable loss,” Creutz said in the statement. “Our entire basketball community, especially his teammates and coaches but all of our club members and their families are devastated and heartbroken over this tragedy.”

Stoughton police and fire responded to 1776 Washington St. around 8 p.m. after dispatchers received multiple reports of an unresponsive child, according to a statement made on behalf of Stoughton Police Chief Donna McNamara.

A private citizen performed CPR on the boy until police arrived. Paramedics took the boy to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, the statement said.

As required by law, every unattended death must be investigated, but the boy’s death does not appear suspicious.

“This is a horrific tragedy and our hearts go out to the friends and family of this young boy,” McNamara said.

The club was closed Wednesday and the facility is working to provide grief counseling and other supportive services to those impacted by the death.

The player loved basketball and Creutz said it is “difficult to imagine the Club moving forward without the presence of his smiling face.”
