NFL referee confuses which sport he’s calling during Bills vs. Texans fumble

Date:

The NBA preseason began a couple days ago. But Clay Martin is refereeing the NFL.

Martin, the head referee for the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans game Sunday, fumbled his sports while describing a potential Josh Allen fumble.

“After crew discussion, the runner was out of bounds before he fumbled the basketball,” Martin said.

CBS play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle said Martin is the varsity basketball coach and athletic director at Jenks High School in Jenks, Oklahoma. Martin joined the NFL from Conference USA.

Martin began his NFL as an umpire in 2015 and was promoted to referee in 2018.

He was named athletic director in June and has held various positions with the school district for 21 years. Martin was the head basketball coach from 2003-2015 and 2017-2022, assistant principal at Jenks High School from 2011-2017 and assistant director for community education from 2017-2024.
