Girls tennis: Montevideo earns a state tournament berth

Oct. 7—SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Not a single match was lost on the Montevideo girls tennis team’s path to becoming the Section 3A champion.

The top-seeded Thunder Hawks swept No. 8 MACCRAY on Thursday before sweeping both No. 5 Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 7-0 in the semifinals and No. 2 Luverne 7-0 in the section title match on Monday at Huether Family Match Pointe.

Singles players Brooke Lindeman, Ashley Klaassen, Avery Albrecht and Carlee Axford each won in straight sets in the section championship for Montevideo. Lindeman and Axford are seniors and Klaassen and Albrecht are juniors.

The doubles teams who were victorious for the Thunder Hawks were Gwyn Smiens and Lily Eisenlohr, Megan Macziewski and Hallie Helgeson and Kylie Johnson and Teagan Epema. All are seniors except for Johnson, who is a junior.

Montevideo competes in the Class A team tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

The Thunder Hawks got past Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at Huether Family Match Pointe in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

One match went to a third set. Montevideo’s Megan Macziewski and Hallie Helgeson won 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 against Benson/KMS’ Avery Davis and Ella Lysen.
