Chamberlain’s McQuirk, MVP’s Eide among leaders after Day 1 of Class A state boys golf

Oct. 7—HARTFORD, S.D. — Chamberlain’s Chase McQuirk and Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Trysten Eide are among the top Mitchell-area performers following Day 1 of the Class A state boys golf championship Monday.

McQuirk fired a 6-over 78 at Central Valley Golf Course to share sixth place with Dakota Valley’s Matt DeBeer after the opening 18 holes of play. He carded a birdie on the par-4 No. 10 hole en route to a second-nine even-par score of 36.

Eide sits in eighth place after finishing with a 7-over 79 against Central Valley’s par-72 layout. Starting on hole No. 10, he finished his final four holes a 1-over-par, picking up a birdie on the par-4 No. 7 hole.

McQuirk and Eide will be chasing Dakota Valley’s Logan Collette and Milbank’s Jonathan DeBoer, as they share the lead after rounds of 3-over 75. Both golfers went 38-37 on their respective nines, with DeBoer carding three birdies. Collette tallied two birdies for his round.

Behind the leaders, Sioux Falls Christian’s Harper Schnabel and St. Thomas More’s Vincent Vanliere are tied for third after rounds of 4-over 76. Canton’s Carson Steffensen was fifth following a 5-over 77. Reigning Class A boys champion Anthony Lanham of West Central sits among a five-way tie for ninth place after firing an 80.

Collette’s performance propelled the Panthers to the top of the team leaderboard, posting a collective score of 314. Defending Class A boys golf champion Vermillion sits in second with a total score of 324. Sioux Falls Christian (327) finished Day 1 in third, St. Thomas More (329) is in fourth, and Aberdeen Roncalli (334) complete the top-five.

Among area teams, Winner is currently in eighth place with a 358, led by Ryder Halligan’s round of 82. Chamberlain (364) sits in 10th, Parkston (375) is currently in 12th boosted by Kelby Neugebauer’s 86, and MVP (388) is in 14th.

The final round of the Class A boys state golf championship begins at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Central Valley Golf Course, with the leaders slated to tee off at 11:20 a.m.
