Mitchell sits in ninth following Day 1 of Class AA state boys golf

Oct. 7—WATERTOWN — Following Day 1 of the Class AA state boys golf championship, Mitchell High School sits in ninth place in the team standings.

The Kernels finished with a cumulative team score of 315 following the opening 18 holes of play on Monday at Cattail Crossing Golf Course, boosted by Asher Dannenbring’s round of 4-over 76.

Dannenbring, who carded three birdies for his round, went 39-37 to finish his round in a tie for 26th place. As a team, Mitchell had three golfers fire rounds of sub-80 against Cattail Crossing’s par-72 layout.

Other Kernel performances include Marshall Widstrom’s 6-over 78 to sit in a share of 42nd place. Carter McCormick shot a 7-over 79 en route to a tie of 49th after round one, and Sam Titze is tied for 61st after posting a round of 82. Everett Morrison fired a round of 83 as he currently is tied for 70th, and Brady Reiners has a share of 76th after shooting an 85.

Watertown’s Ty Lenards carded one of eight under-par rounds to lead the tournament after Day 1, shooting a bogey-free 6-under 66 with six birdies. Harrisburg’s Charlie Swift, Pierre’s Nicklaus Bothun, and Tea Area’s Derek Andersen sit three strokes behind Lenards after rounds of 69. O’Gorman’s Drew Simon (70) completes the individual top-five.

Watertown’s Kaden Rylance, Gabe Norberg, and Brandon Valley’s Jackson Burns sit in a share of sixth place after rounds of 71. Harrisburg’s Riley Christensen, Pierre’s Luke Olsen, and O’Gorman’s Taten Mauney are tied for ninth at 72.

The performances of the defending Class AA team champion Arrows have them sitting at the top of the team leaderboard with a cumulative score of 6-under 282. Pierre sits five strokes behind in second place (287), while Harrisburg (290), O’Gorman (294) and Brandon Valley (296) round out the top-five.

The final round of the Class AA state boys golf championship will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Cattail Crossing Golf Course, with the leaders slated to tee off by 12:10 p.m.
