Vikes open with win

Date:

Oct. 9—B-R 5, Sullivan 0

JASPER —The Barr-Reeve Vikings earned their 20th win in the regional tennis opener at the Ed Yarbrough Tennis Center in Jasper on Tuesday.

The Barr-Reeve tennis team advanced to the regional championship by beating Sullivan 5-0 to go to 20-1 on the season and will now face Jasper, who defeated Lincoln, 5-0.

The Vikings’ 5-0 sweep started with B-R’s Xavier Meiring beating Sullivan’s Levi Chickadance, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, while Daniel Underwood beat Hunter Pinkston 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Kierson Lengacher beat Andrew Jackson 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3.

At No. 1 doubles, B-R’s Levi Lester and Isaac Madison beat Carter Mischler and Jayden Scott, 6-2, 6-3. In the second slot, Kyle Graber and Brody Swartzentruber beat Sam Couch and Spencer Hanks, 6-3, 6-4.

“I was pleased with how our single players grabbed the momentum early and never let up. No. 1 and 2 doubles were on a mission and played really good doubles against two quality opponents. I am proud of how our guys played against a well-coached Sullivan team. Wednesday night will be a very tough task but we’re excited for the challenge and opportunity ahead,” said B-R coach Brock Higgins.

Meredith falls short

Washington’s No. 1 tennis player Josh Meredith competed in the singles sectional Tuesday at Jasper versus Forest Parks’ Elijah Brosmer and fell 0-6, 3-6.

The singles sectional allows a No. 1 singles or No. 1 doubles team to advance until they are defeated and Meredith advanced from the Lincoln sectional last week.

“It was not the way we wanted to finish the season. However as a freshman, Josh has gained quite a bit of experience at the number one singles position. I know he will put the work in and will continue to improve throughout his high school careers,” said WHS coach Jason Johnston.
