Man Utd want to sell £80m signing for £10m as Ten Hag tells club he’s surplus to requirements – report

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has decided that Harry Maguire is surplus to requirements and the club are now ready to sell him for £10 million in January, according to the Daily Star.

The Red Devils signed the England international for £80m from Leicester City in the summer of 2019, but he has fallen out of favour under the Dutchman and was close to being sold last summer.

Injuries to other players have given Maguire an opportunity to reestablish himself as a key player for Man United, but he is behind the likes of Matthias de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro and even Jonny Evans if everyone is fit.

The 31-year-old is currently in the last year of his contract at the club, but Man United have an option to extend it by 12 months and could trigger the clause should they fail to sell him in January.

Maguire will not be short of options next summer if he remains on the market, and he will look to get back into the starting XI once he returns from a fresh injury.

He has played in nine games across all competitions this term and has remained a key and dependable player.

However, Ten Hag rates his younger options more than the Englishman, and getting his £190,000-per-week wages off their bill will also appeal to the Old Trafford club.

They are also keen on getting the likes of Casemiro and Antony out of the club, and some high-profile departures are expected in January and next summer.

Man United spent around £206m on the signings of Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, Yoro, De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui during the last summer transfer window, and they will be desperate to balance the books going forward to stay within the confines of the Profit and Sustainability Rules by selling some of the highest earners.
