Fatal crash closes westbound I-44 near Six Flags

Date:

EUREKA, Mo. – Westbound Interstate 44 near Six Flags was closed late Sunday afternoon following a wrong-way crash involving a tractor-trailer and two other vehicles.

The crash took place around 6 p.m. on the approach to Exit 264 for Highway 109.

According to a spokesperson for the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes, which led to the crash.

The crash involves a tractor-trailer, a passenger car, and at least one pickup truck. The highway patrol confirmed a fatality at the scene.

Rob Komotos, who was driving on westbound I-44, told FOX 2 he had a near-catastrophic encounter with the wrong way driver just moments before the crash.

“We wouldn’t have made it,” he said. “I mean, this guy was coming straight at us. One second later, either we’d all have been either passed away or very, very injured, pretty bad.”

Komotos said the wrong-way driver struck a car behind him and then collided with the tractor-trailer.

All lanes of westbound Interstate 44 east of Six Flags were blocked, along with one lane of eastbound I-44.

Traffic was diverted onto Highway 109.

Members of the St. Louis County and Eureka police departments responded to assist the highway patrol with redirecting traffic.

CORRECTION: A prior version of this story indicated a different set of lanes were closed on the interstate. We regret the error.
