A new era at St. John’s: Pioneers name Fitchburg native John Ginnity as new boys’ basketball coach

Date:

St. John’s High concluded an extensive, six-week search Tuesday afternoon when it announced John Ginnity has been hired as coach of the boys’ basketball team.

Ginnity, a 1997 St. Bernard’s and 2001 Clark University graduate who starred on the court at both schools, replaces Bob Foley.

Foley retired last month after a 44-year run on the Pioneers bench in which he became the winningest high school basketball coach in New England history.

“I’m excited about this,” Ginnity, 46, said from the Shrewsbury campus after meeting with the team. “Growing up in the area, obviously you know the tradition and history of St. John’s and the alumni who go on to do great things.

“Playing basketball, you understand the winning and the passion and everything that goes into St. John’s basketball. I’ve been observing it from afar, and now to be involved with it is awesome.”

Ginnity has previously served as an assistant at Assumption, Clark, Framingham State, Worcester Academy and Burncoat.

“His passion for the game, commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court, and authentic enthusiasm for our school’s mission prepare him well for taking on this important role in our school community,” St. John’s headmaster Benjamin Horgan said.

“We are excited to see how Mr. Ginnity will build on the strong tradition of St. John’s basketball program and the positive impact he will have on our student-athletes.”

Athletic director Michael Mead seconded the emotion.

“As an experienced player and coach at both the high school and collegiate level, I look forward to working with Mr. Ginnity and know that he will serve our players well,” Mead said.

“He will bring a level of energy and excitement to our program. His understanding of the game and ability to coach and inspire young men is unquestionable and will bring a new level of energy and excitement to the St. John’s basketball program.”
