Manchester City plot major contract talks with Rodri during lengthy injury lay-off

Premier League champions Manchester City will underline faith in Rodri by laying down new terms for the Spaniard during his injury lay-off, according to a club insider.

The Spain international midfielder is expected to be sidelined for the duration of the ongoing season and deep into next summer, having sustained damage to both his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus.

Rodri was withdrawn during the early stages of an eventful 2-2 draw between Premier League title rivals Manchester City and Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium, appearing to jar his knee at a corner kick whilst marshalled by Thomas Partey.

Subsequent examination from various professionals in Spain resulted in surgery being undertaken by the Manchester City midfielder in the Spanish capital of Madrid resulting in a confirmed lay-off in excess of eight months.

However, Rodri retains the full support from the entire organisation in Manchester and as part of that faith in him to make a strong recovery back into the game, club officials are keen to open negotiations over a new and improved contractual agreement.

That is according to the information of Manchester City insider ‘Tolmie’s Hairdoo’ on X, who states that the Premier League champions will ‘underline their faith and commitment’ to Rodri by discussing new contractual terms during his lengthy extended lay-off.

It is likely that any conversations in the immediate future over a new deal for Rodri will be spearheaded by the club’s long-term Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain – despite the 60-year-old’s confirmed exit at the end of the season.

Begiristain is confirmed to be bringing an end to an illustrious career working on Manchester City’s playing squad and recruitment drive, with the Spaniard to be replaced by Sporting CP’s Hugo Viana.

Sources within the club have insisted that it will remain business as usual for Txiki Begiristain and there will be no sense of the 60-year-old winding down his intensity of work during the second-half of the 2024/25 season.

As such, Begiristain will not only lead dialogue over a new contractual agreement for Rodri, but will likely be responsible for Pep Guardiola’s own future and a potential replacement – should that be necessary – alongside Kevin De Bruyne’s expiring deal.
