Nets convert Tyrese Martin to two-way contract, waive former lottery pick Killian Hayes

Date:

Ahead of the start of the 2024-25 NBA season this week, the Nets announced a handful of roster moves on Saturday morning.

Brooklyn converted guard Tyrese Martin’s contract to a two-way deal for their final two-way roster spot.

The team is also waiving former No. 7 overall pick Killian Hayes and guard Amari Bailey.

Martin, 25, was drafted with the No. 51 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of UConn and played 16 games for the Atlanta Hawks during the 2022-23 season. He spent last year with the Iowa Wolves, the NBA G League affiliate of the Minnesota Timberwolves, averaging 17.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists per game over 33 contests.

The 6-foot-6 wing played in four games for the Nets during the preseason, averaging 4.8 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.0 assists over 12 minutes of action per game.

Hayes signed with Brooklyn in July, but did not appear in any preseason games with the team. He is expected to pursue a deal with the Nets’ G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets, as he continues to work his way back from a hip injury, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The 23-year-old has struggled so far during his NBA career, averaging just 8.1 points and 5.2 assists per game over four seasons with the Detroit Pistons.

Bailey, 20, was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets with the No. 41 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and played in 10 games with the team last season. Over 13 games in the G League with the Greensboro Swarm, Bailey averaged 18.0 points per game. He played in just two games with the Nets during the preseason, averaging 2.0 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game off the bench.

Bailey is also expected to join the Nets’ G League team, according to the NY Post’s Brian Lewis.

The Nets tip off their season on Wednesday, Oct. 23 on the road in Atlanta against the Hawks at 7:30 p.m.
