Liverpool showed they mean business in this season’s Premier League title race with their seventh win in eight games on Sunday.
Goals from Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones in a 2-1 win over Chelsea saw the Reds go back to the top of the league table, one point clear of the might Manchester City – who left it late to beat 20th-place Wolves earlier on Sunday.
Here’s Liverpool’s best-performing players in the win over Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday, according to 90min’s player ratings.
Curtis Jones: 8/10
Who else?
The Scouse midfielder was given the uneviable task of keeping the best player in the Premier League, Cole Palmer, quiet for 90 minutes on Sunday, and he did exactly that.
Jones was outstanding up against the in-form Palmer in the defensive third, putting in a stunning block to deny the Chelsea star what looked like a certain goal in the first half.
He didn’t do too badly at the other end of the park either. Jones won Liverpool the penalty which Mohamed Salah converted to give the Reds the lead, and then he popped up in the box again in the second half to stab the ball into the back of the net to give his side a 2-1 lead shortly after Nicolas Jackson had equalised.
An all-round outstanding midfield performance from the 23-year-old.
Honourable mention
Mohamed Salah: 7/10
It’s fair to say that Salah enjoys playing against his former employers.
The Egyptian superstar was once again in fine form against Chelsea on Sunday, bagging his 11th and 12th goal contributions against them with a spot kick and a lovely assist for Jones’ winning goal.
There’s very few, if any, better big game players in the Premier League than Salah. He’s world class.
