Division 3 State Championship: Reid Ohanesian shot a 3-over 75 at Foxborough CC to take medalist honors by three strokes and propel Ayer-Shirley to its first state championship in school history.
The Panthers finished 43-over par as a team to easily wrap up the title. Monomoy was second at 51 over and Weston finished third at 53 over. Lunenburg (60 over) was tited with Manchester Essex for fifth, while Monty Tech was ninth and Maynard took 10th.
Ohanesian shot 38 on the front nine, registering birdies on the third and ninth holes, and shot 37 on the back nine with birdies on 11m 13 and 17 to take the title. Tommy Bergin tied for seventh with an 83, while Aadi Patel (85) and Jason Turner (88) also shot well to keep Ayer-Shirley low.
Lunenburg’s Jack Heffernan and Andrew Nicosia each shot 11-over 83 to tie for seventh, while Assabet’s Tucker Patricks shot 86, Monty Tech’s Beckham Chouinard carded 87 to wrap up the locals in the top 25.
Division 2 State Championship: Troy Gregg shot 2-over 74 to tie for seventh and Mason Bowie carded 3-over 75 to help Nashoba finsh second via a tiebreaker with a score of 310 at the Division 2 State Championship meet at Berkshire Hills CC in Pittsfield.
Gregg managed three birdies in his round and only bogeyed two holes and overcame a double bogey on six to lead Nashoba. Bowie was nearly as sharp, notching birdies on two holes to keep the Wolves in the hunt.
Nashoba’s Nolan Engelhardt added a score of 78, while Winston Zhao shot 83 and Irv Carnes added an 84 for the Wolves.
Pope Francis won the team title with 308 score, while Westwood and Old Rochester also had 310. Tantasqua (330) was tied for 11th and Valley Tech was 13th at 334.
Whitinsville Christian’s Gabe Deters was the top local finisher, shooting a 1-over 73 to tie for third. Deters had birdies on 2, 8 and 15 on the day.
Pope Francis’s Michael McGrath and Foxborough’s Zac Georgantas tied for medalist honors with 1-under 71s.
Leominster’s Luke Grebinar and Whitinsville Christian’s Micah Deters each shot 4-over 76 to tie for 12th, while Tantasqua’s Sam Pieczynski and Valley Techs Leopaul Gamelin each tied for 22nd with a 6-over 78.
