Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan is set to take on an audacious career change, making his ATP tennis debut.
“Former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid forward Diego Forlan will make his ATP tennis debut at the Uruguay Open next month. The 45-year-old is playing doubles alongside Federico Coria,” Ben Jacobs posted on X.
“Forlan was a promising tennis player before choosing football,” the journalist added.

This update was confirmed by Diego López, the tournament director of the Uruguay Open.
“I have his confirmation that he wants to play; he has been preparing for some time, training a lot in tennis,” López revealed.
“I think he deserves this opportunity and give him this mutual satisfaction. Of course, I’m talking about our beloved Diego Forlán.”
Forlan played for Man United from January 2002 until August 2004, scoring 17 goals and providing nine assists during 98 appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson. (Transfermarkt)
During his tenure at Old Trafford, Forlan helped United to win the 2003/04 Premier League title as well as the 2004 FA Cup and the 2003/04 FA Community Shield.
He went on to play for Villareal, Atlético Madrid, and Inter Milan, among a host of others, retiring after leaving Hong Kong-based Kitchee in 2018.
Forlan also enjoyed a bright career on the international stage, playing 112 matches for Uruguay and netting 36 goals.
Some of his shining moments for his country include leading Uruguay to the semi-finals at the 2010 World Cup as well as the final of the 2011 Copa America.
He also helped his country secure a third-place finish in the 2004 Copa America, defeating Colombia 2-1 in the third-place play-off.
