Thuram: ‘Goals mean more when I help Inter to win’

Marcus Thuram reveals why he made that familiar goal celebration after securing Inter’s last-gasp winner away to Young Boys. ‘Goals are more important if they help the team to win.’

The Nerazzurri had been thoroughly frustrated in Bern and ran quite a few risks at the other end too, but above all saw Marko Arnautovic’s penalty saved by David von Ballmoos at the dawn of the second half.

It was only when the substitutes came on that they managed to shake things up, as Lautaro Martinez’s back-heel flick launched Federico Dimarco, the low cross from the left tapped in by Thuram at the near post.

“It was a difficult match against a decent team and the atmosphere from their fans was incredible tonight,” Thuram told Amazon Prime Italia.

“We’re pleased with the victory. Goals are always important, even more so if they help the team to win. I am very happy.”

When he wheeled away towards the Inter supporters, the France international made the same ‘shrugging’ motion that Dimarco often uses for his goal celebration. Was that a tribute for the assist?

“Our fans were cheering us on, I heard them and we gave them the victory, so I felt like doing that celebration.”

Thuram has had an excellent start to the season with seven Serie A goals and three assists, but this was his first in the Champions League for this term.

It allows Inter to climb to seven points in the table and they are yet to concede a single goal.

However, there was bad news too, as Carlos Augusto pulled up with a suspected hamstring strain.
