Barcelona held talks with key defensive target this year but progress has stalled – Romano

Barcelona’s pursuit of Alphonso Davies has become a key talking point following a recent report by Fabrizio Romano.

The journalist mentions that after the January transfer window this year, Barcelona held a meeting with people close to Davies, hinting at their interest in securing the Canadian’s services.

However, despite the initial discussions, no substantial progress has been made in bringing him to the Camp Nou.

This news came at a time when Davies’ contract negotiations with Bayern Munich are stalling. The relationship between the club and the player appears to be deteriorating, with little optimism for a resolution.

Current reports suggest that there is only a slim chance—around 10%—of a contract renewal being agreed upon. If things remain as they are, it seems increasingly likely that Davies will leave Bayern on a free transfer.

Barcelona banking on Flick

Barcelona, fully aware of this, are monitoring the situation closely. They believe they may have an advantage in luring Davies, particularly due to his strong relationship with manager Hansi Flick, who previously coached him at Bayern.

While Real Madrid are also interested in the left-back, Barcelona are hoping this personal connection with Flick will help tip the scales in their favour.

During the Barcelona-Bayern Munich match, Davies went up against Barcelona’s young star, Lamine Yamal. Although he found it difficult to contain Yamal at times, Davies still managed to be one of Bayern’s standout players.

After the game, he was seen having a brief interaction with Flick, which only adds to the speculation that a move to Barcelona could be on the horizon.

Extravagant demands

However, despite their interest, Barcelona will have to carefully consider Davies’ financial demands. Reports indicate that the player is asking for a signing bonus of over €15 million, along with a net annual salary of €10 million.

These figures are significant, and Barcelona’s board is weighing the costs of the deal.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich have not given up hope entirely. However, come January, when Davies is allowed to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs, the situation could take a dramatic turn.

Barcelona’s interest is strong, but they will face competition as Davies’ future becomes clearer.
