Three Wildcats finish in double-digits in Charity Exhibition Game against Islanders – Abilene Christian University Athletics

ABILENE, Texas — Fourteen Wildcats got to see action in an exhibition game against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, but the ‘Cats ultimately fell 100-86.

Alongside the action on the court, the Wildcats partnered with the Community Foundation of Abilene to raise money for the organization throughout the game. By the end of the game, a total of $1,000 was raised for the CFA. 

The entirety of the Wildcats’ roster had the opportunity to have minutes in the game against the Islanders. Despite the loss, the coaching staff tested different rotations, found out which pieces worked and discovered areas where they needed to approve.

“I’m excited about us figuring out some things that we would not have figured out if we did not play a Div. I exhibition game,” head coach Brette Tanner said. “I’m not pleased with the outcome, but I’m pleased with the fact that I think we learned something about our team today. With what we learned, we know how to move forward with the rest of training camp.”

ACU finished the game shooting 48 percent from the field, but struggled from the 3-point line, only having two through the entire game. Meanwhile, TAMU-CC finished the game shooting 63 percent from the field and 39 percent from the 3-point line. 

Junior forward Leonardo Bettiol led the way with 22 points for the Wildcats while shooting 50 percent from the field and adding six rebounds. 

Two other Wildcats also finished the afternoon in double-digits. Senior Hunter Jack Madden finished 13 points and three assists. Redshirt sophomore Cade Hornecker added 12 points off the bench shooting perfect from the field while adding five rebounds. 

Along with the three scoring in double-digits, eight other Wildcats finished the night in the scoring column. 

“We’re going to be a really good team. We’re going to learn from the mistakes today and we’re going to have a good week of toughness practices  so we can get better and be ready for November 4.”
