OMAHA, Neb. – Braden Smith scored 31 points but it wasn’t enough as No. 15 Creighton edged No. 14 Purdue in a charity exhibition game at the CHI Health Center Omaha on Saturday night.
The Bluejays shot 60.0 percent from the field and made 13-of-28 (.464) from 3-point range to offset a Purdue rebounding edge (33-31) and a plus-6 margin in turnovers for the Boilermakers (13-7).
The Boilermakers shot 47.8 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from 3-point range (8-of-21). Purdue was just 15-of-24 (.625) from the free throw line.
Braden Smith tallied 31 points, the second-most points scored in an exhibition game during the Matt Painter era. Smith added seven rebounds and four assists and was 12-of-23 from the field and 5-of-11 from 3-point range.
Trey Kaufman-Renn added 22 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while Fletcher Loyer scored 17 points with five assists.
The trio combined for 70 of Purdue’s 87 points.
The highly-regarded freshman class combined for 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Purdue will host Grand Valley State in its final exhibition tuneup on Wednesday, Oct. 30, in Mackey Arena.
