New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye left Sunday’s game against the New York Jets with a head injury.

Head coach Jerod Mayo told CBs before halftime that Maye would not return to the game after Maye was initially listed as questionable with a head injury.

Maye was injured on a hit to the head in the second quarter. Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood chased Maye down on a scramble and made helmet-to-helmet contact on a hit from behind as Maye slid.

The hit did not draw a penalty flag.

Maye went to the sideline medical tent after the hit and then to the Patriots’ locker room. Jacoby Brissett took over at quarterback on New England’s next possession.

Maye completed 3 of 6 passes for 23 yards and ran for 46 yards and a touchdown prior to his injury. The Patriots held a 7-6 lead when he left the game.

Maye was the No. 3 pick in April’s draft out of North Carolina and started the season sitting behind Brissett on the depth chart. The Patriots won their first game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but fell to 1-4 with Brissett as their starting quarterback. Maye took over at quarterback and made his first NFL start in Week 6 against the Houston Texans.

In two starts and a relief appearance prior to Sunday’s game against the Jets, Maye had completed 64.1% of his passes for 7.1 yards per attempt with five touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s added 68 rushing yards on 10 carries.
