According to the FDA, Listeria monocytogenes is organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Poison Control says Listeria was initially discovered in the 1920s in rodents, rabbits, and guinea pigs, and is now recognized as a foodborne pathogen in humans. Listeria is associated with a higher mortality rate than other foodborne diseases and is responsible for nearly 20% of deaths due to consumption of contaminated food in the U.S.
