South Carolina basketball preseason profiles: Weston Coggeshall

Date:

Lamont Paris’ South Carolina basketball team begins their season in less than a week. On November 4th, the North Florida Ospreys will travel to Colonial Life Arena for the opener, and the 2024-2025 Gamecock season officially will be underway. In the days leading up to the first game, GamecockCentral will finish profiling each member of the team. Today we will look at walk-on guard Weston Coggeshall.

Weston Coggeshall is a walk-on shooting guard who joined the program this summer after playing his high school ball at Philip Simmons High School. Like fellow walk-on Lance Piper, he doesn’t have a clear path to a role during the 2024-2025 season, but he has a good trait that could become a factor later in his career.

Listed at 6’2″ and 175 pounds, Coggeshall is not a big guy. He is a shooting guard-only type of player because of his size and lack of overall ballhandling. However, he earned his spot on the team for a reason.

On offense, Weston Coggeshall wants to shoot the ball from the perimeter. He isn’t the type of player who can create his own shot consistently. When he’s open, though, shots fall. Coggeshall knocked down a lot of shots from the corner during his high school days, but he’s not afraid of shots from the wing or the top of the key, either.

Defensively, it’s far too early to know what type of player he can be. There are a lot of steals on his Philip Simmons film, but high school ballhandlers and passers aren’t the most trustworthy with the basketball. Still, if Coggeshall can provide quick hands in passing lanes, that will be a plus.

It seems most likely that Coggeshall and Lance Piper are competing for a deep bench role on this team. The Gamecocks have solidified what looks to be a sure top eight or nine, and cracking into that will be difficult for the freshman. He is a redshirt candidate. However, if he shoots the ball well, he could force Coach Paris to keep him on the active roster.

Coggeshall and the Gamecocks hope to follow up a record-tying 26-win season and 2nd-place SEC finish with another strong year. Another trip to the NCAA Tournament would mark South Carolina’s first back-to-back berths in the Big Dance since the 1990s.
