La Cueva alum returns to coach boys tennis

Date:

Nov. 1—The La Cueva Bears have named their replacement for the retired Dick Johnson, the longtime boys tennis coach who led La Cueva to over a dozen state championships during his career, including earlier this year.

Former Bears standout Michael Tran, a multiple state champion (both individually and as part of the team) at La Cueva during his playing days, will be the program’s new head coach.

He was once ranked No. 1 in the Southwest section of the United States Tennis Association. Tran was also a former University of New Mexico Lobo, from 2014-19.

He graduated from UNM with degrees in biology and psychology.

In addition to coaching tennis, Tran also owns and operates Tasty Pot, a Taiwanese restaurant that opened in Albuquerque last year.
